From The Head Teacher

Welcome

Welcome to the new school year at the British International School.  I trust that students are looking forward to the new term and are ready to start refreshed and as enthused as ever. Our new Sixth Form students have been in school today, being introduced to their IB Diploma Programme and to the community service activities that will support their core CAS (creativity, action service) learning.

Newcomers

Over the past weeks, new and returning teachers have been in school preparing for the start of term.  We are fortunate to have recruited 15 excellent newcomers to the school, to replace and supplement the 12 teachers who left in June.  We also welcome Srta. Edith Winiker as Spanish language assistant,  Mr. Rob Marsh to cover Mrs. Nesta Lanyon-Jones’ maternity leave until 20th November and Ms. Melanie Wagstaff to cover Mrs. Helena Wilson’s maternity leave until half term.  Photographs of our newcomers appear in the following pages.

Examination Results

Congratulations to our Y10, 11 and 13 students who took IGCSE and IB Diploma examinations last term.  We are busy doing a full analysis of results and I am happy to report that overall this was our best year ever as a school and that students gained the qualifications they needed to progress to the next stage of their education.  For our Year 13 students, this means access to the very best universities across the world.  Well done to all students and teachers involved!  I look forward to being able to present more details over the coming weeks.

Key dates

In this BISbuzz you will find a summary of key dates for the year in a form that is easy to print out and pin up at home.  Do remember that circumstances occasionally mean that we need to change and if that  happens, the correct dates will appear on the front page of BISbuzz and in BISblog (http://richarddyerbisblog.blogspot.com/).  Of particular note early this term are the PTG Welcome Back Coffee Morning, the Parent Information Evenings and the PTG Wine and Cheese Evening. I look forward to seeing many of you at these events.

Sleep

Those of you who know me will be aware that I am very fond of promoting proper sleep for teenagers.  For many, the transition from summer holidays to the school week will involve re-adjusting to a different pattern of sleep.  Do have a look at this wonderfully stimulating and entertaining TED talk about the value of proper sleep for us all:
