Phuket 7's Football Tournament 2012

The annual Phuket 7's tournament has once again been a resounding success, with the tournament involving 20 schools and over 900 players of all ages.  BIS Vietnam was represented in both the under 18s boys and girls competitions, with some fantastic individual and team performances on show. All players demonstrated the work rate, commitment, and spirit that allows them to compete in such a challenging tournament, and must be congratulated for their efforts. A commentary from the team captains, Tara Subba and Max Dyer.

On behalf of the senior girls, I can truly say that the Phuket U18s football tournament was an enlightening experience – emotionally, mentally and physically, our boundaries were pushed and our limits greatly extended. On the first day, we had our share of victory and defeat but our team, whose motivation and drive were fueled by the greatly appreciated support from staff and parents, continuously demonstrated resilience and composure on and off the pitch. Unfortunately, our advancement to the semi-finals was thwarted by the referee’s decisions to disallow 3 of our goals when the advantage rule should have been played.
A special mention goes to Ha Vu as she stood in as goalkeeper at the last moment to replace Nhung who had injured her arm prior to the tournament, but whose presence inspired us all and prominently contributed to the team spirit. Even though we did not reach the finals, our team bonded throughout the tournament and I can truly say that we have a young cadre of stalwarts and “Beckhams”; I am sure they will develop into even greater players in the coming years.
Overall, the trip was an absolutely exhilarating experience. I am thrilled to have participated in such a remarkable event with such wonderful talent from all age groups. Our trip was filled with laughter and midnight giggles of excitement. Even on the sidelines, we were taught how to perform headstands by none other than the wonderful Ms. Morley whose time, efforts and dedication towards our team are most greatly appreciated. The trip has inspired us all to continue our passionate involvement in sport and we have learnt that co-operation (on and off the pitch) is instrumental for our mental and physical development both in the pursuit for sporting excellence and in overcoming the challenges in life ahead.

Players’ Player: Alex Greig
On November 8th, a team of 8 boys travelled to Phuket to compete in the annual football tournament hosted by the British International School Phuket. We were all really looking forward to playing football at a higher level.
Our first match was against ICS. In the first half of the match it was clear we were all half-asleep and were getting outplayed at every turn. After half-time and a motivating talk, we picked up our game and got a couple of shots off. In the end we lost the game 1 - 0 which was a real shame. Our next game was against QSI which we were confident about. However at the end of half time we were 2-1 down. We kept our heads high and managed to pull off a 3-2 win with an amazing last minute goal. Our best game was against BIS Phuket B and we managed to secure a 6-1 victory with Alex scoring 4 of those goals. After that game we all went back to hotel, ate, and got some well deserved rest in preparation for the next day.
The next day we got up early and took the bus to the school for another day of football. Our games did not go according to plan. After putting up a good fight we lost both games against Regent’s and Uplands which ruined our chances of getting through to the knock-out stages. We did, however come fifth overall which out of twelve teams was a great achievement for us. Our main hindrance was the fact that we had only one sub which eventually took a toll on us throughout the tournament.
On the last night we all went to the night market and ate some interesting local food at the food court. It was a great end to an exciting, action-packed weekend. It truly was an awesome trip.

It has been a pleasure to be involved in such a well run and established competition, and all credit must go the our students for making the trip such a huge success on a day to day basis. They have been ambassadors for the school in exemplary fashion, and outstanding role models for all young people taking part in sport and physical activity. Many thanks to Mr Ballantine and Mr Soriano for their coaching and assistance with the trip, and additionally all parental involvement and support.
