U18 BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

U18 GIRLS

On Saturday the 2nd March, our two senior BIS basketball teams travelled to SSIS to participate in the annual U18 Inter-school basketball tournament. Our girls’ first match was against TIS, and after a close game, we won, beating them by one basket. This was followed by another win against AMIS, before facing SSIS, the team we lost to in the individual fixtures. We played a good game, and lost only by 21-29. Our next competitor was ISHCMC, who we had also lost to in the fixtures. However, we made a great comeback, and beat them 33-15, securing our third win in the tournament.

Both TIS and SSIS also won 3 out of their 4 games, which meant all three schools were contenders for the finals. It came down to point difference, which we unfortunately lost out on, meaning we couldn’t play for first. However, we automatically came third, because we beat ISHCMC, and it turned out that TIS won the tournament, despite us beating them in our first game.

U18 BOYS

As we woke up at the break of dawn and huddled into a school bus at 7:30 on a Saturday morning, U18 boys and girls were ready to face their challenges of the day. The boys’ first match was against the hosts, SSIS, who took the first win of the tournament against us. But as the day progressed so did our skills as a team and allowed us to score a massive 40-7 against AmIS. This ranked us second in our group giving us still the chance for the semis. Next we faced Taipei. Both teams were neck and  neck throughout the match, with few points difference, until we lost our roll and concentration in the last few minutes, placing us 36-42 down. But we didn't stop here, greedy for a          position, we weren't going to stop until third place was ours. With sweat, effort and teamwork we managed to do so. With one minute & thirty seconds left and down by 3, we were in offense. It was our shot, but we sadly missed. The rebound however slipped through ISHCMC hands and allowed us to catch it on the three point line. The time was running out. I looked to my left and threw the ball to JK, the point guard of the team. With the time now down to 20 seconds, he took the shot for the three points that would set us tied with our rivals. As the ball flew through the air the teams, both boys and girls clenched their fists and waited… It was a beautiful swish, which led us to tie. But that wasn't enough. The next possession was ISHCMC. But with aggressive play by Arnet, not only did we get      possession but also got fouled. Two free throws, first one in. 3 seconds left on the shot clock, the game was ours. Joy spread through the team as we huddled and shouted in the centre of the court appreciating our victory against our neighboring rivals ISHCMC even if for 3rd place.
